OOTD 8.8.10: Gray + Dusty Shale

This past Sunday we went to brunch after church. When the waitress handed my five-year-old son his chocolate milk in a kids' cup, he looked at me and (quite seriously) asked:

"Is this chocolate milk or a cappuccino?"

When I was growing up, I loved to read my parents' copy of Art Linkletter's Kids Say the Darndest Things. Now I'm lucky enough to hear these things daily. :)

Here is what I wore that day:

Happy Friday! Our traveling is just about done for Summer 2010 - flying Atlanta to Seattle this weekend - but I still have some snapshots and OOTDs from the trip to post over the next week or so.

I'm also getting started on plans for a trip to Austin, Texas this Fall... any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

xoxo

  3. I love it! That cardi is perfect for summer because it's so light and breezy! I have only been to Texas on a few layovers, I have heard it's a great place to vacay!

  5. I've never left a comment before, but I had to say I not only love Austin, I happen to live here too! Be very, very glad you're not visiting in the summer because it's HOT. Fall is perfect. I don't know if you like b-b-q, but Stubb's or Salt Lick are good and definitely give you the Texas vibe. The Oasis is a restaurant overlooking the lake where many people take guests -- it happens to be very close to my house. The view outshines the food though. A visit to Austin wouldn't be complete without live music -- you can find it at many restaurants on the weekends, especially. South Congress (a street in central Austin) is the epitome of "Keep Austin Weird". And, although I'm a biased Longhorn fan, if you can catch University of Texas home football game, that would be a treat too. Feel free to ask me any questions too. 6. Bellamama - thank you!
    JenLynn - thanks :)
    mrs.a - it's going fast, isn't it
    triciathomas - thanks!
Dominique - thank you! My parents have visited there but I don't know anything about it - will check out the link :)
4watsons - thank you so much for all the great info! I love bbq and will definitely check out all the places you mentioned. Thank you also for your email - I may have some more specific questions as we get closer... we are considering a lake house there (or possibly even an eventual move) so during the vacation we'd like to get a little info about neighborhoods, school districts etc. since we've never been there. Restaurants and music are definitely a good start. And I'm glad to hear the weather should be good. :)

  7. Dear sparrowandsparkles,
that cardigan is fabulous! Wonderful colour and light texture, beautiful done - it looks gorgeous! Children say so funny things - for a very long time I have written down lots of the gems our son said - because otherwise you forget them so easily. Now he studies Law and says other witty things :-) Britta

  8. LOVE those colors together! I am a Houston girl, but Austin is so much fun! I've heard great things about the Driskill as well and there is awesome shopping there. The Domain has a great J.Crew. Salt Lick is definitely the best bbq. The Oasis has become too touristy though, and I've heard their food isn't even that great. One place you MUST go is Amy's ice cream :)

  9. I also live in Austin, and would be glad to answer any questions! The Oasis has a must-see
view, and live music with free salsa lessons on Sunday nights. If you are closer to downtown, take a stroll around the hike-n-bike trail to get the local flavor. The Bob Bullock Museum has fantastic TX history exibits and IMAX features, great for kids.

Sarah Mina - thank you for your recommendations. Good to know about the Domain. We will definitely have to make time for Salt Lick & Amy's :)
laurie_miw - thank you so much for commenting! We will have the kids with us so the museum/imax info is good to know. Thanks also for your email... I may have some more specific questions as we get closer to the trip :)

  11. Another Austinite here! There are lots of great suggestions above, but you might also want to check out some of the local mexican food restaurants: Fonda San Miguel is upscale but wonderful. Guero's and Maudies are both good, as is Chuy's on Barton Springs Road. Right next door is Shady Grove (great burgers, salads, etc.)with live music.

The Domain is an excellent suggestion for shopping since it include a nice J Crew and a Madewell AND an Anthropologie! There are also a number of wonderful restaurants out there: North (modern Italian) is our favorite with a great happy hourand outdoor seating when it is nice.

We put both of our kids through school in the Westlake area in Eanes ISD schools and they both got great educations....and were very well prepared for college. Lake Travis also has a great reputation but since we don't live quite that far out, I don't know as much about their programs.

Have a great trip and blog about it when you get back!
