Say It Ain't So, Domino

So I heard from a friend a couple weeks ago that Domino Magazine was shutting down... and while I was hopeful upon seeing "subscribe to domino for $10/year..." in my issue that arrived yesterday, upon visiting the website, I see that it is true - March 2009 is their last issue.

And the March issue is such a delight... the pink & red cover features the oh-so-stylish 51 year old Ines de la Fressange.  Inside, four of her amazing living spaces (and her insider tips on Paris!) are featured.

This magazine is not just about shopping and decor ads... though I was interested to read "decorating from your travels" (p. 56), I was equally interested in the recipes in "shop once, eat for a week" (p. 47).  Now, I try to do this anyway, but my menus don't usually include prosciutto & goat cheese flatbread and lemon-chicken kebabs.  Thanks, Domino, I am going to try this!  "beauty fix" (p. 32) just happens to feature one of my current fav perfumes (Prada Infusion d'Iris) and has talked me into trying a new one (Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca).  There is also a great tip on page 118 about adding a smidge of Starbuck's bottled Frappuccino to your home-brewed morning coffee.  Going to try it.

Domino, I really wish you would stick around.  I've really enjoyed your features and photos.  I even bought your book.  Plus, I still have about 9 months left on my subscription.

Well, hello, H&M. Nice to meet you.

We've had an H&M in town for quite a while and even though it is directly in my little path between Anthropologie and J Crew, I had never stopped in.  Whew... there is quite a lot to take in.  But I was happily surprised to see other women in my general age group and quite a few things I would be happy to wear.  And the prices...

city fit stretch chino Claire, British Khaki and Ivory:  Great basic.  The extra couple of inches in length (compared to the Cafe capri) give you a longer leg but still show off your shoes... if I ever get out of Uggs and rain boots, that is.  Khaki: $17.49, Ivory: $10.49. 

wool jersey empire rosette tank, Black:  Love!  Gathers and roses, what's not to like.  Unfinished hem. $27.99

tie front dress, Rhubarb:  Yes.  Comfy, comfy, comfy.  Tie at the side of the empire waist; felt lovely all over. The color is similar to a darker, saturated melon. $27.99

merino Portland cardigan, Melon: Perfect layering piece.  Beautiful spring-y color.  Great deal.  $20.99

cotton Cherie cami, Key Lime:  Cut - perfection.  Color - Yowzie!!!  I love key lime pie and I was picturing something slightly softer, slightly greener.  It does look bright online though, and yes sir, it is.  Neon.  Searching for a cardi color that can go over this one so I don't look like a tennis ball. $20.99

Wandering through Anthropologie the other day, a sparkly crystal candlestick caught my eye:  gorgeous!

but I actually had just purchased two virtually identical candlesticks at Michaels on sale for - I can't remember exactly -  about $10 each.  Score!

This bag...

instantly gives me visions of capri pants, strappy sandals, sunny sidewalks, and iced coffee.  Now, I do love a fancy designer handbag  (my LV Speedy:  I would carry you anywhere; MBMJ Lil Riz:  you are lovely) but there is just something about a big ol' $22.99 Target tote in a garden party hue that makes my heart go thumpety.  The tag calls this "pink", but it is a perfect salmon color.  I see it livening up quite a few pieces of J Crew's muted Spring palette in a few months...

A $20 Lipstick I Don't Feel Guilty Buying:

   

So I happened upon this at Sephora yesterday at the Cargo display.  Not only is this lipstick paraben-free with no synthetic color or fragrance, the tube is made out of CORN, the box is embedded with wildflower seeds (plant it!) and $2 of my purchase is going to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.  I picked it up in "CeCe" - Courteney Cox's shade.  I have been trusting her picks ever since I started wearing Nars Mykonos eyeshadow which she mentioned in an interview.  The perfect shade for blue green eyes.  I am wearing it with my new Plant Love lipstick today!
